Area D
Trench 5
July 6, 2002
Effort was two-fold today. Firstly, I wanted to get the N portion of the trench to some semblance of flat as, save the plaster and flat-lying pottery, there were no upstanding architectural features. This was done by removing several relics from the last season. L5090, an unclear burnt mudbrick concentration in the central-S portion of the trench was removed but unfortunately revealed nothing new about its function or context. L5089, surrounding the NW pit, was taken down to contemporary levels, but the matrix seemed pretty mixed with possibly some penetration of the outer areas of the ash pit. Similarly, L5084, occupying the majority of the eastern portion of the N half of the trench was brought down to similar levels to L5079.
L5088, the pedestaled rock group in the center-W of the trench was removed, revealing that the rocks and dark ash pit of L5080 are not immediately related. Though the locus seemed to contain mudbrick, it was not in any discernable architecture revealing either that previous excavation had cut it or, more likely, that the area was mudbrick collapse, this possibly from the N wall of the southern mudbrick structure. However, underneath in L5092, a plaster or compacted ash/organic feature was revealed and partially articulated. Stratification would point to an association with the mudbrick structure, but at the moment that relation is somewhat tenuous.
Finally, as no clear divide has been seen between the possibly 2nd millennium pottery in the W and the 3rd millennium in the E, a 40 cm wide sounding was cut into the two areas to try and reveal some clues. Unfortunately, as this was done towards the end of the day any data from such is still forthcoming.
Plans for tomorrow include continued work on the sounding, removal of the pottery on surface L5079 (which will be given a new locus as "removal of surface") and some cleaning and preparation of the S structure for renewed excavation as the remainder of the trench has now been moved to levels similar to its surface level.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
