Description | Locus 4 was opened across the entirety of the northern extension of the trench. It was opened with a level surface and consisted of a dark brown, claylike soil with white inclusions. The upper portions of the locus contained many small grass roots, typical of a humous layer. Locus 4 also contained high quantities of small rocks but few large rocks, unlike Locus 3. Relatively high quantities of tile were found in this locus, although fewer tile fragments were found in Locus 4 than in Locus 3, which directly overlaid Locus 4. Additionally, some pottery and bone was recovered. Most materials found in this locus were ancient, with many dating to the site's 6th century occupational phase, although there was one fragment of modern tile recovered as well. This indicates that this was not a contextually secure deposit. The mixed chronological nature of the finds, coupled with what appeared to be a humous layer, indicates that Locus 4 was the topsoil underlying the dirt dump of Locus 3. Locus 4 is equivalent to Locus 2. |
