Description | Locus 6 is a light brownish-yellow soil approximately 10 centimeters below Locus 5, the surface topsoil. It was opened to represent this soil change. Locus 6 had the largest amount of pottery, with a total of 1,307 pieces. Pottery was composed of impasto fragments primarily though contained a great deal of other fine ware and coarseware sherds. A great deal of iron slag and vitrified terracotta was discovered; almost all special finds associated with metal production were unearthed in this locus (Bronze rod 20120073; Slag 20120085; Iron nail 20120091; Crucible fragment 20120103). Textile implements, including rocchetti (20120074; 20120076; etc.) and spindle whirls (SPECIAL FIND #) were also discovered in this locus. Locus 6 was closed when the soil level reached the elevation of Locus 1, 3, and 4, and Locus 7 was subsequently opened to represent the entire surface of the trench. |
