Description Locus 3 is an extension of T-75, which is 2x4 meters in dimension. It extends 2 meters north of the northern baulk wall and 4 meters east of the western wall. Locus 3 consists of a topsoil humus layer, which is dense with organic material and extends across the entire trench. Additionally, Locus 3 is stratigraphically equal to Locus 1 The soil is dark brown and forms large clumps when broken up. The clumps were easily broken down, crumbling with little force. Throughout Locus 3, the soil remained mostly dry with pockets of denser, moister soil appearing as excavation progress. The soil in these pockets was more yellowish-brown in color, and more clay-like in consistency. At the beginning of excavation several tree stumps, ranging in size from 5 centimeters to 1 meter across, were present and noted in the trench diagram. During excavation, Locus 3 yielded a considerable amount of tile and pottery that was scattered throughout the locus and was not concentrated in any particular area of the trench. However, it should be noted that similarly to Locus 1 the area in which the trench was locus was also used as a dirt dump during excavation in the 1960s, which is why Locus 3 produced more tile than other loci. Additionally, small fist sized rocks were scattered throughout the locus, which may be a result of erosion or the activity of earlier excavators. Although Locus 3 is stratigraphically similar to Locus 1, Locus 3 even fewer bone fragments that Locus 1. Only 2 very small fragments were recovered from the locus.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
