Earth Remarks | Mud brick, brick frags. (see installation supplement); shells, lithics, querns, grinders abundant; medium to large boulders in Loca 20 & 21; column base in Loca 21--large, rounded, flat, 88 cm diam; tumble N of Wall 4 contained small & medium boulders along face (47.5, 38.0, 44.0 x 36.0, 33.0 x 17.0 cm) & three large cobbles (avg 20 cm)--Loca 26, 27, 28; sorting was primarily wind; random sorting should also be noted; numerous partial querns (both basalt & limestone); increase in animal bones & shells prompted jocular speculation about "kentucky fried goat, with snail appetizers;" bricky material in probe (Loca 35) at level 913.95; probe in Loca 28 yielded 7th-6th century single-spout oil lamp w/convex base--ca 70% intact, no surface involved, level 913.91 at top center of lamp, located 1.10 m from S balk, 1.66 M from E balk; probe in Loca 22 yielded accumulation of long bones with butcher's marks, astragali (from S balk 2.15 m, from E balk 1.94-1.72 m), at least 3 bones showed fracture marks at point of impact by top-lying stone (ie fracture resulting from rock tumble), levels on bone deposits--913.90, 913.82; Loca 33/34 junction--yielded small clusters of unworked flints |
Stratigraphic Remarks | Extenisve locus, overlying entire square. Depth variable |
