Description Locus 1 is a dark brown humus layer with organic material including leaves, grass, and roots. A few small rocks ten to fifteen centimeters included in the soil matrix. Four large stumps twenty to seventy centimeters in diameter and six small stumps four to fifteen centimeters in diameter appear across the trench. Modern iron was found in this level. Five pieces of terra cotta and one piece of pottery were found in this layer. What artifacts were found were incredibly worn. The soil pack was loose and the locus was relatively shallow--between two and seven centimeters deep.
