Description | Locus 12 is the brownish soil sitting on top of Locus 15 and beneath the northern half of Locus 11. It is "L"-shaped with a "leg" extending south along the N half of the E baulk. It can be seen through the entire N baulk, the northernmost ca. 50 cm of the W baulk, and the northernmost ca. 1.5 m of the E baulk. Locus 12 is more of a straight brown color, although in certain lighting conditions and in certain areas it could be described as olive or yellowish brown. The soil is clayey, but it feels finer than in higher or lower loci. It was moist when excavated but would bake quickly in sunlight. A line of rocks, running E-W was found in the NW "leg" of the locus, but since it protudes into Locus 15, it is describe on the form for that locus. Finds include comparatively (for the trench) high amounts of ceramic and terracotta. Plaster and bone were also recovered. Special finds include a panther protome, an impasto vessel that protudes into Locus 15, and a loomweight fragment. |
