The trench was continued down to the level of the adjoining trenches. As inside the wall, large outcroppings of bedrock began to appear shortly past the point where the south wall began to break up. Tiles were very few.

Stones began to appear through most of the southern half of the trench but no pattern was yet visible. Several boxes of tiles were dumped and one sizeable piece of cornice (raking sima) found at 1.00 m E, 4.80 m N and directly over the stones.

A new trench 5B was laid out 3 m x 7.5 m at right angles to 5A and parallel to 1AD. Topsoil was removed.

The level was taken down so as to show that irregular bedrock covered the whole trench.

Test cuts were made along the N edge of the wall so as to define fallen stones not belonging to the wall itself. When the level

of the trenches was taken down, pottery, tiles, and plaster appeared in an even increasing number.
