I. Introduction

I. INTRODUCTION

Excavations during the 2012 and 2013 seasons at Poggio Civitate revealed evidence of non-elite domestic architecture located to the southwest of the Piano del Tesoro in the Civitate A area.  There are traces of at least two phases dated to the late seventh century B.C.  The simple foundations suggest that these building would have been constructed with waddle-and-daub walls and thatch or other light roofing material (see Etruscan Studies (2013) 16(2) 287-306).  Subsequent excavations during the 2014 and 2015 seasons in the Civitate A area between these remains and the complex of buildings on the Piano del Tesoro discovered not only a well, but evidence of a large building with robust walls that could have supported a tiled roof (Early Phase-Orientalizing Complex 4 or EPOC4 for short).  The well is dated to the later phase of the site and

seems to have been deliberately filled in at the time of the site's destruction (mid to end of the sixth century B.C.).  EPOC4 is dated to the early years of the seventh century B.C. (see Etruscan Studies (2016) 19(1) 87-148).  The purpose of T-83 is to examine the area between the non-elite domestic architecture and the well and EPOC4 to ascertain what if anything occurred here.  The hope is that excavation here will give more context to the features already discovered to the west and east.  Also, it may reveal some relationship between these two areas.
