Locus Summary
Locus 5 and Locus 6
Beginning at a depth of 240 cm below surface (see p. 9 for explanation), Locus 5, characterized by an olive brown soil (2.5y 4/3) with carbon inclusions, contained a large amount of terracotta, but the ceramics found therein were extremely worn, fragmentary, and small in quantity. Locus 5 also produced small amounts of bone, but nothing very notable or significant. Locus 5 closed at a depth of 264 cm below surface.
Locus 6 was characterized by a yellowish or light olive brown soil (also with charcoal inclusions). The ceramics found within this locus were similar to those of Locus 5 -- nothing notable or significant, for the material was worn and there were few finds.
The dense packing of terracotta ends at roughly 285 cm below surface, where the soil changes from light brown to a light greyish brown soil (2.5y 5/1-2). Locus 6 was closed at 285 cm below surface and the new soil was designated Locus 7 and yielded mostly ceramic (often better preserved than that of Loci 5 and 6) and less terracotta.
Locus 7
Immediately below the large tile packing, at about 285 cm below surface, along with a soil color change came a significant change in material. This material was better preserved (i.e., less worn) and in greater quantities than that of Loci 5 and 6 (and it seems, in retrospect, that a use or occupation level was encountered). The pottery itself was so abundant that it is likely to comprise a number of complete vessels and/or full profiles.
