Daily Log

June 28, 1976

Once again we are excavating cut #2.  The object now is to clean down the entire area, revealing the entire course of foundation walls for the room.  The chalky packing in grids I 37-38.

  • Find #1
  • I 37
  • Dark brown/red earth, below chalky packing
  • Rocchetto fragment

III casette of tile dumped

  • Find #2
  • O 39
  • yellow soil stratum
  • Half of feline water spout from lateral sima

In grid L 37-38 a heavy concentration of pottery was encountered.  Several complete profiles may be forthcoming.  This is the area directly in front of the "doorway" and the numerous sherds are suggestive.  Many more pieces of the pot entered on page 75, #2 (Photo) were found.  A few of the pieces preserved the paint.  The pot is of an orange fabric with yellow slip.  The yellow slip was then painted with brown/red lines to form geometric designs: horizontal and vertical lines and X's.

  • Find #3
  • L 38
  • yellow soil stratum
  • Complete profile of grayware "compote"

Still left in the ground for removal on the following workday: a possible complete vase- grayware.

Very fine bucchero- in sherds, no complete profiles, was noted in grid I 38-J 38 and in grid L 38 in front of the doorway.
