Work continued with pick and shovel in T 31-33 and P/Q 34-36.  At 46cm (west) and 55cm (east) below the surface of the baulk the brown crumbly clayey soil ended, revealing a lighter colored soil.  Before excavating this new layer, baulk trim was carried out.

In P/Q 34-36 picking and shovelling proceeded normally for the first meter.  Picking in P/Q 35 soon revealed stones (boulders) which seem to run in an east/west direction.  At this point work slowed down and proceeded only with trowels.  A bronze nail (or possibly slag) was recovered from P/Q 35 very close to the north edge of this cut.  Also recovered was a pithos rim and

possible body sherds.  Small chunks of plaster (less than 0.5cm in diameter) became more frequent in P/Q 36 and 35.  Also, a piece of carbonized wood approximately 1.5x1.5cm was recovered.

When excavation ended for the day, trowel work in P/Q 35 had revealed several boulders (small to medium size) which seem to be part of the stone copping rather than a wall because they appear to be radomly scattered over the 1m width of the trench rather than laid out uniformly.  P/Q 34 remains to be excavated.

The current level of P/Q 37 is 68cm below the datum point.  In P/Q 40 the level is 71cm below the datum point.

Work in P/Q 36-35 recovered one full litre carton of pottery and one third of a cassetta of tile.  Two large (approx. 10x15cm) fragments

of pantile were recovered (and put on the tile pile).  One undecorated flange fragment of approximately 10x15cm was also recovered but thrown out.

The excavation of T31-33 recovered only a handful of pottery and tile fragments, as did the baulk trim.
