The area around the stump in meter T-76 was taken down to 40 cm.

A new cut to 60 cm was begun in meters R, S, T-76 exposing more of the terracotta/mortar floor at 60 cm in these meters.  The soil of this cut varies from a reddish/orange just above the floor to a brown/yellow more towards the 40 cm depth level.  The cut contains an abundance of tile though it does not seem to be indicative of a "tile fall."  There are, however, areas of greater and lesser concentration.  Some of the pan tile fragments appear to be usually thin but on the whole most are the normal thickness encountered in past seasons in the T26/T23 area.  Some of the tile appears to lie directly above the floor, on its surface.

Glassy slag-like material is being encountered but is being discarded with tile.  Carbon in small fragments is being encountered, though not in great concentrations.

A large flat stone, incorporated into the floor, was encountered at 50 cm in meter T-76.

Note that the stone in meter T-76 is 2.80 m from the stone in meter T, S-79 (center to center).

The stone in T-76 lies at a lesser depht than the other two stones found.  This is due to the fact that the mortar/clay floor rises to a depth of 50 cm towards meters T-74-76.

Another large stone was partially uncovered in meter R-75.  This stone appears to be at a depth of 50-60 cm.  The stone in R-75 is 2.60 m from the stone in P-77 and 2.75 m grom the stone in T-76 (center to center).

The soil appears to be much redder just above the "floor" in meters Q, R-76, 75 than in meters S, T- 76, 75.

Note that a number of terra cotta lumps, apparantly without definative shapes, are being encountered.

The stump in T-76 was removed.  The roofs did not penetrate through the floor.

The 50-60 cm cut to expose the floor was continued to the west through meters R, S, T-75, 74.  The soil was inspected more slowly and carefully in wheelbarrows in order to detect the presence of ivory.  The two remaining fragments of the pan tile in P-77 were removed as clumps with the surrounding soil and the soil or floor beneath it.  It appears that in removing these fragments the floor may have been removed also in this area.  The resulting holes through the floor (or through the plaster above the floor) were filled with soil.  Sample fragments of this material below the tile were saved and taken to the magazzino.  Note that the tile fragments lifted as clumps were coated with poly vinyl acetate solution.

The discovery of ivory slowed work considerably and the soil was checked even more carefully.

The trench was photographed this afternoon.

The fragments of pan tile were numbered and layered out with the rest of the pan tile in the magazino (see pg. 121)
