Finished cutting meters 52S 160E and 52S 161E. Instead of pausing to level the meters alerady cut, it was decided to continue the cut into meters 53S 160-161E.
Continued cut in meters 53S 160-161E. At the end of the day, the approx. depth of the entire trench was 130-135 cm b.d. The soil in meters 51-52S 160E appeared to change from the burnt red with many inclusions, charcoal, terracotta, and plaster into a yellow and grey clayish soil with fewer artifacts. Tomorrow, the soil will be looked at more closely to determine if another locus is to be formed.
When the cut began moving further south in the trench, more pottery surfaced, though still less than what came up at the end of last season, along with a lot of bronze, terracotta, and plaster. The total terracotta and plaster for the day were 2/3 cassetta and consisted of several large
fragments of pan and cover tiles, as well as many small highly eroded pieces. Approx. 1/2 latte box with pottery was found and consisted of mostly coarseware and impasto, about 3 pieces of orangeware, one bucchero piece, and a couple pieces of bone. All this came from locus 13. There was also a bulk bronze box for locus 13 with approx 10 pieces of bronze.
The last half hour of the day was spent trimming baulk walls and produced two impasto pieces and one piece of bone. There were two special finds.
