Red Wall Area (Grids J-K 1/2)

In the morning, this area was cleaned for photographing.  We also continued excavating southward right up to the Upper Building wall foundations (i.e. the wall between R5 and the courtyard).

The red burnt soil here is fairly deep continuing right down into the foundations -- i.e. amongst the stones which at this most southern end of the wall are not packed so tightly together, but rather like the outside faces of the wall.  The filling inbetween consists of compact red wall plaster or brick.

It is not yet possible to determine whether the Red Wall bonds into the UB foundations; perhaps when the Red Wall foundations stones are lifted, it will be possible to determine the relationship between these two walls.

Area I-K 3/4

Later in the morning, we began taking down the dike left in this area; it runs N-S between the Big Stone Construction and the UB wall foundations between R5 and the courtyard (for profile, see ER III p. 181 ).

The top layer (A Level) consists of a yellowish-grey soil and a very few pieces of small tile fragments and sherds -- possibly UB pavement and fill.  This layer is approximately 10 cm deep.

Below A level, there is a stratum of compacted soil which shows signs of burning; it contains bits of carbon and reddish striccie, as well as many more tile and pottery fragments and some wall plaster.

Below this burned stratum (B) is another compacted level lying directly over the N-S line of stones.  Decided to leave the dike at this level for the time being.

Area J-K 2

Returned to the Red Wall area to remove the earth lying next to the east face of the Red Wall foundations in grids J-K 2 in order to expose the foundation stones for drawing.  While doing this, a fragment of the rim of a bean-plate was found practically within the UB foundations only 20 cm below the top of these foundations -- see Find #1 below.  The rest of the earth above the LB foundation stones is being left until the Red Wall foundations are removed.

Also removed some more of the red earth above the red wall foundations in grid H/I 1/2.  The foundation stones of this wall give a very irregular appearance as they do at the northern section which was exposed last year.  They are not very deep (approx. {number not recorded} cm) and appear to rest on a layer of soil/debris which intervenes between them and the Lower Building foundations.
