  • Tile: 2
  • Pottery: 3

The soil remaining in the stump which was lifted yesterday from meters S-64,65 was removed and checked in the wheelbarrow for pottery and other artefacts.  One box of pottery was recovered and almost no tile was recovered.

Meters X-alpha,59-71 were mapped out with picchetti and work began with pick and shovel removing the topsoil to a depth of ~25cm in X-59-61 and ~10cm in alpha-59-61 with the trench floor (not to be confused with the "terracotta/mortar floor") sloping gradually between meters X and alpha.  It appears that the trench floor will be parallel to the "mortar floor" of the building.  The soil of this first cut to remove topsoil was dark for the first 5cm from teh surface and grey and rooty for the next 20cm in depth.  Many

small stones were encountered but little tile and pottery were present.  This topsoil cut was completed through X-alpha-61-59 and extended into and completed in beta-gamma-61-59 bringing the level of the cut to ~15cm-10cm in these meters.

A tree with its stump was removed from meter alpha-60 and upon doing this the second cut was begun in these meters.  This second cut is to a depth of ~35cm in alpha-60 but was not extended to the surrounding meters due to lack of time.

Note that one pottery box was recovered during removal of the topsoil in X-gamma,61-59 and one pottery box was recovered from the second cut (during tree removal) in alpha-60.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
