A second 10 cm. cut was taken in meters M-N/14-15. Excavation of this area was rendered difficult by the presence of four large stumps. The soil in the cut was dark brown in color and contained a large amount of roots and small rocks. One quarter of a casetto of small pieces of worn tile and a few pieces of worn impasto and coarseware were discovered. In addition, two small pieces of slag were also recovered. An additional cut was also taken in meters G/12-15 and in the western portion of meters H/12-15, extending the depth of the trench in these meters to ca. 130-140 cm. The soil in the cut consisted entirely of clean galestra and
contained no material. The area around the pit in meters H-I/12-15 and to the west of the burn area and possible pit in meters H-J/14-15 began to be cleaned with mestalina and brush. The majority of this area, which currently has been escavated to a depth of ca. 85-100 cm., will be cleared down in individual terraces. It is hoped that the clearing of the area in this manner will facilitate a more precise definition of its strttigraphical sequences. Preliminary clearing this morning at the northern extremity of the area in meters H-I/15 uncovered a large amount of pottery (1 box), including some burned pieces. The soil cleared from the area was dark brown in color and contained a light concentration of carbon and also included a few small pieces of vitrified tile.

Two additional 10 cm. cuts were taken in meters M-N/14-15. The soil throughout both cuts was dark to medium brown in color and contained many rocks and small roots. Three large stumps in the northern portion of the area prevented complete excavation of meters M-N/15. A few small pieces of worn tile and one quarter of a box of weathered impasto were discovered in the cuts. Four small pieces of slag and a single piece of bronze were also discovered at the base of the second cut a depth of ca. 90 cm. Clearing with mestalino was also continued in the area to the west of the pit in meters H/12-13. Cleaning revealed the area to consist entirely of clean galestra, which contained no material.
In order to more closely define the western boundary of the pit, the cut completed this morning in the western quarter of H/12-13 to a depth of ca. 140 cm. was extended an additional 10 cm. to the east. The entire area of soil cleared consisted exclusively of galestra. Clearing of this area has therefore confirmed that the pit is bounded to the west in meters G-H/12-13 by clean galestra soil. It was also decided to leae a ca. 10-15 cm. srip of galestra to the west of the pit in the eastern quarter of meters H/12-13 in order to both protect the western flank of the pit and preserve the context of the matrix surrounding it. The remainder of the trench was,
then swept in the hope of detecting the limits of teh second possible pit in meters H-J/14-15. Owing to the brightness of the light this afternoon, no soil changes could be cleanly detected. Further examination of the area will therefore be necessary tiomorrow to more accurately understand the stratigraphy of teh northern portion of the trench.
