Daily Log

July 7, 1988

The cut started Wednesday morning was finished and swept (R67; P67; and P65). The soil in P 65-67 seems to be more sandy and greyish than the rest of this stratum. The pithos fragments in P 65-66 were cleanded and photographed. Body fragments and tile fragments were found around the rim. This type of rim is associated with the Upper Building. About 0.20m west of the pithos fragments (in P 65) a complete bucchero rocchetto (find #1) was found and another rocchetto (partially preserved) was found 0.20mwest of the first rocchetto (find #2). In sweeping the floor of the trench a small spindle whorl was found in Q67 (find #3) - still sitting in the floor. 1 casetta of tile, 1/2 casetta of plaster, 3 boxes of mixed pottery (impasto, bucchero, and

coarse ware), 1/3 box of bone (especially from P 65) and several small fragments of bronze (bagged) were found.

  • bronze frag (twisted shaft ?)

The third cut into the plaster layer was begun (P71 and part of Q71 as well as R67 and Q67). The nature of the soil and finds seem to be similar to the second cut (depth of third cut 0.70m). A large amount of small bronze

fragments came from P 71 (put in a separate bag). 1 1/2 casetta of tile, 2/3 casetta of plaster, 2 1/2 boxes of pottery.
