A.M.

Elevations at the bottom of Locus 4, which, due to the dense-packed layer beneath it, and the horizontal spread of tiles and artifacts which seem to rest upon that surface, is being interpeted as the archaic floor deposit and destruction debris, were: SW 1.28 B.D.; and center 1.24 B.D. Photographs taken yesterday make the case for the floor surface. Incidentally, the area upon which the tile layer was resting in SF: EXT during the 1999 season (see EC    ) measured out to .97 m in the North and 1.20 in the South, below the same datum point. Therefore, the tile layer removed

during the 1999 season most likely relates to the archaic phase of the site, rather than the orientalizing phase. EC III pg ___ suggests that the 1999 tile layer must continue beneath the archaic foundation walls. This, however, may not be the case, although the socles of the upper building seem to extend to a high elevation in relation to the floor level. This problem will be explored later in this season, or in future seasons.

The tiles collected during this season's excavations in SF:EXT were measured and dumped for today. The totals for loci 3 and 4 were 1/2 cassetto and 2 1/2, respectively.

Locus 1 and Locus 2 produced less than 1/4 cassetto of combined tiles.

Excavation of Locus 5, consisting of the hard packed surface of the probable archaic floor and the material directly under it, was undertaken in meters 36-37S, 171-173E.

Resting directly beneath it was a looser, sandier soil that gave way more readily to the pick, and this way excavated as Locus 6. Neither locus 5 nor 6 produced more than half a latte box of pottery and bone. Beneath Locus 6 was a hard, crusty layer that will be excavated as Locus 7 during the afternoon session.

P.M.

Locus 7 opening elevations were 1.25 NE; 1.23 NW; 1.27 SE; 1.25 SW;center 1.30m B.D.

Locus 7 produced a moderate amount of carbon, and less than 1/2 latte box of pottery and bone. Baulks were cleaned and straightened.
