Extensive wood cutting to the southeast of the \'cava\' and along the southern flank of the road above the farmhouse has revealed a alrge area of Poggio Civitate as yet untested by excavation.  A 3x6 meter test trench, CB23 was therefore laid out with the aid of a compass atop the large mound which lies ca. 25 meters above the farmhouse road.  Fifty centimeter cuts at both the northeast and southwest corners of the trench quickly revealed the soil in the area to be composed entirely of reddish clay, like that found in the \'cava\' below and to contain no archaeological material.  As a result, excavation of the trench was terminated and it was decided

to abandon further exploration of the surrounding area in favor of resumption of work in T-26.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
