Work began this morning by removing the earth cover (fill) placed in meters R-W,62-69 and then removing the sand fill beneath this.  This exposed the level reached during excavation of these meters last year and also exposed the three stacked pan tiles lying on the floor in meters W-68. (For photograph see pg 256 , MT VIII, or Final Trench Photos T26.1982, MT VII.)  One half a cassetta of tile was recovered from the "fill" soil.

The remainder of the baulk in meters T-65-69,

about 15cm tall, was taken down to the level of the floor in meters U-65-69, thus completely bringing meters T-65-69 to a depth of ~70cm.  This soil was very dark, black at a depth of ~60cm nd then changed to reddish from 60-70cm, just above what appears to be the floor.  A bronze coil was found as well as an iron file.  The file however may be modern.  Two boxes of pottery and 1/2 cassetta tile recovered.

The tile above the column base in meter V/W-65 at ~50cm was cleaned with mestaline and appears to be in fact 3 tiles stacked upon one another, flanges down. (For photograph, see pg 255 , MTVIII.) The southernmost portion of these tiles appear to be vitrified (bubbly).  The large tile in meter W-62 at ~50cm was also cleaned with mestalina.  This tile is believed to be a lateral sima (see find #2, pg 93 ) and a piece of "rabbit" head was found slightly beneath one of its edges (find # today).

Meters alpha, beta 62,63 continued to be

taken down to ~30cm.  There are many stumps here and a concentration of small stones along the eastern portion of alpha, beta 62 which have been lifted. A large quantity of pithos fragments were also found here.  What appears to be "floor" was encountered at ~30cm in meter beta-63.  It seems that the floor rises from Z-63 to beta 63.  The soil was dark and rooty.

Meters alpha, beta, gamma 66,65 were almost completely taken to the "floor" level.  Several stumps remain in these meters.  The soil was dark and rooty.  As the 20cm cut was continued south, floor was encountered at ~20cm in gamma-66.  What may be a column base was also encountered here.  Because the floor rises going from north to south and the ground level descends going north to south in these meters it is difficult to excavate by (continued on page 143)

"cuts."  Thus, it was decided to bring all of meters alpha,beta,gamma-66,65 to "floor" level.  The floor here is somewhat broken and perhaps has suffered from erosion down the slope to the south over the centuries.
