Weekly Report

After one week's work the trench looked like this ( ):

Area I-J/2-3 next to dyke between Erik's R-5 cut and mine was excavated to a depth of ca. 70 cm from prev. dug ground.  A red/black/yellow burnt stratum called (B), ca. [no information given] cm thick, appeared at [no information given] cm detph, including a pinkish ca. 2 cm thick hard layer not yet clearly established as a pavement.  Here a concentration of good bucchero sherds ( see p. 27 ).

Below this was a thick stratum (C) of clayey soil containing carbon and few pieces of tiles, pottery, and bones.  At depth of ca. -65 cm, the quantity of material increased markedly, indicating a low destruction level.  More good pottery, esp. p. 58-60 .

An approx. N-S strip of copmact soil colored red/gray was left out west of

this area, running through grids J-I-H (?) 1-2, as it might belong to upper preserved part of N-S \'courtyard wall\' cleared by E.N.

West of this, work was carried down ca. 30 cm in grids I/0-1 where a 20 cm thick stone fill (\'pavement\' of Upper Building) was lifted and big fragments of pithoi and tiles appeared right below in a highly redburnt characteristic soil with much carbon (B = redburnt).

Stones of big size appeared on border line H-I/2-3, could belong to E-W wall traced by I.E-G. in R-6 and by E.N. in his R-5 cut, but still unclear.

No definite results north of I yet.  Upper surface of two big-sized stones on a high level visible in G-H/3.
