Pottery Summary
T-45 yielded a lot of pottery this summer. There were 14, 794 sherds of bulk pottery recovered and at least 24 cataloged finds. Locus 4 had the most cataloged ceramic, with seven finds recovered. Locus 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 had no cataloged finds. Locus 2 only had one find, a fragment of Ionic pottery . Locus 3 had two cataloged ceramic finds, a sherd of Ionic black slip and an oinochoe handle fragment . Locus 4 had 7 cataloged finds, two of which were bucchero, a bucchero Potnia Theron handle fragment and a bucchero lug handle . Other finds from Locus 4 include a painted oinochoe neck fragment , an incised impasto sherd , stamped and incised buccheroid , an impressed buccheroid base , and the rim fragment of a fenestrated vessel . The wealth of cataloged finds from Locus 4 is not surprising since Locus 4 also contained the most bulk pottery. Four finds were extracted from Locus 7, two pieces of stamped bucchero and , an impasto handle fragment , and a bucchero Potnia Theron handle fragment . Locus 9 had two finds, one stamped impasto and one stamped bucchero fragment . Locus 10 had one cataloged piece of ceramic, a piece of incised bucchero, . Six finds were recovered from Locus 11, only one of which was bucchero, which was roll stamped . Locus 11's other finds include two sherds of fenestrated vessels and , stamped impasto and incised impasto and a buccheroid sykphos handle .
Locus 4 contained the most bulk pottery with 4236 sherds, nearly 30% of the total bulk finds. Locus 3, 7, 9, and 11 also produced large amounts of bulk ceramic, each yielding over 1500 sherds and in the case of Locus 7, over 2300 sherds. Loci 3, 4, 7, 9, and 11 have also held the highest concentrations of other finds; this suggests that these layers were probably associated with residence or production.
Impasto was the most common fabric by far in bulk pottery, constituting 9120 finds and over 60% of the total body of recovered pottery. There were nearly equal numbers of fine impasto and coarseware, each producing just over 2700 finds while there were only 189 bulk bucchero finds in all. The highest concentration by far of bucchero in T-45 was in Locus 7, which yielded 115 out of 189 finds. Locus 11 had the next highest amount, followed by Locus 4 then Locus 9.
