Trench Layout

Trench Layout

In 2006 a grid system was established for the excavations and surveying then starting in Vescvado di Murlo. An origin point (0 north-south, 0 east-west) was placed and marked within the exposed forno features; likewise the absolute elevation of this area was established relative to its height above sea level (ASL). In 2015, and again this season in 2016, the areas being excavated will continue to use these points.

As in 2015 note that the trenches this season are also situated on a disused tennis court and have been laid out parallel and perpendicular to the boundaries of the court; consequently, they are not perfectly parallel or perpendicular to the areas investigated

in 2006 and not set at right angles to north-south/east-west lines, or at perfect meter-marks.

Consequently the following formula was employed to calculate the coordinates of the trenches in 2016. These were based on the pre-known points of the trenches established in 2015 with a Total Station.

Drawing of two hypothetical rectangular trenches.

Where E and F are known points and X and Y are known distances. To find D.

D= (E-F) x X + E

In order to take coordinates for finds a north-south and east-west baseline was laid out by Andrew Carroll. The same datum point as 2015 is being employed; it is 306.2m A.S.L.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
