Tile - 6

Pottery - 6

Morning:

In alpha beta - 59-60 floor was round under the tiles being lifted.  There appeared to be a thin layer of burn over the floor and slag, small carbon flecks and very badly burned and vitrified tile pieces.  There are still small stones present and a few pieces of pottery which were not burned.  All this material came out from above the floor.

In Y-2 - 58-57 the cut to the floor was continued.  In Y-2 - 57 towards the floor there appeared to be more disintegrated plaster in teh soil making it lighter and dryer but still brownish.  Some large pieces of slag were found, small chunks of plaster, two cassetta of tile, and two boxes of pottery including some bucchero but mostly impasto and some bone.  Only a few pieces of tile and pottery were burned.

In XY-72 more covertile was uncovered.  The eastern ends of these protruding tiles remained burned and blackened.  Burned pottery, slag, and one piece of burned(slightly) tile were recovered.  Work was also done in XY-74 with similar results.  One half cassetta of tile was recovered - about one - quarter was plaster.

In O-74-76 the wohle area was photographed and drawn including the pan tile which was then lifted.  It appeared to be in good shape and was

entire except for the corner protruding into the baulk.  Excavation continued under and around this pan tile area O-74-75.  A heavy burn layer was again encountered under a red plaster layer at about 95 cm.  Three cassette of tile and plaster were removed including one of flat edged plaster.  Some of the tiles from this burn area were burnt or partially so but none of the plaster.  One box of pottery and lots of bone most of which came from the burn area included a lot of burned ware and bone.

In NO-83 the area was further cleared down to the floor around the column base.  There were no stones like in M-83 but a heavy plaster (yellowish) layer at about 60 cm with burn underneath.  Of two cassette of tile and plaster about one third showed burn.  There was also slag and carbon in the soil and some burnt pottery (one box recovered).  Floor level was not reached.

In RS - 59-61 the red area and the tile concentration was cleared to the baulk at R for drawing.  About two boxes of pottery were recovered, mostly fineware and bucchero but also some bone and coarseware.  More pieces to the burned cooking bell were recovered as well as about three quarters cassetta of pithos.  In R moving into 59 the soil changes from red soil to a yellowish green plaster filled soil with much less pottery.  Some small pieces of bronze were found in R-61 outside the red

Pottery - 1 and a half

Afternoon:

In Y-2 - 57-58 work continued clearing to the floor which appeared at a level of about 35 cm in alpha-58, 50 cm in alpha-57, and 60 cm in y- 58.  There appeared to be a 101 of plaster over the floor, some of which was left to dry to more easily distinguish between floor and plaster.  Not much tile or plaster was found in alpha-57 except in occasional pockets.  The soil remaind loose and brown with only a little slag, pottery, and tile was mostly unburnt.  In the of alpha-57 to the south-west a large flattish stone protrudes from the baulk but it is not in line with the column bases.  It does appear to rest on the floor and is 15-20 cm in height.

In XY-72 further east into the roll meter and into 73 there appeared to be poalster lying directly over more deteriorated cover tile.  This plaster was whitish yellow and fairly hard.  There was also plaster mixed in with the soil in small chunks with a little disintegrated.  The soil was very hard, clumpy, and brown with little or no burn.  About one quarter cassetta of tile was recovered including some plaster.  None appeared burned.  About one box of pottery was recovered.  It was mostly coarseware and some bucchero.

In R - 59-61 the baulk was scraped and drawn except for a red and burn strata which was difficult to see and was wet and left til tomorrow.
