Corrections to the grid were made this morning as excavation of ST1 continued (See
). It was discovered that the 192 North/South transect was plotted almost 1.3 meters east of the actual line. As a result, trenches needed to be replotted. Fortunately, all that needed to be done to ST1 was to shift the north-south lines 30 cm to the west to put it line with 193 East. We triangulated our northern points off of John Beeby's corrected points, and then proceeded to do the same to our southern points. No work had been done outside the corrected square, and only a 30 cm area remained to be taken
out on the west side.
After the correction, excavation continued to the south. The topsoil was brought down to a new soil, a lighter brown soil with terracotta fragments and sand and mortar inclusions. This was designated Locus 2 , and it was decided to bring the entire unit down to this locus before taking elevations. When we extedned excavation south, we recovered an amorphous lump of terracotta, possibly decoration on a ridge pole tile.
PM
Excavation continued to the east in the unit, as topsoil in the southwestern corner gave way to Locus 2. By the end of the day, Locus 2 soil had been found in all areas except for the 2 x 2 meter area in the southeast corner. The averagedepth below topsoil for Locus 2 was about 20 cm. Small bits of terracotta turn up around the tree trunks. Also, many rocks, some flat, were recovered today, but they did not seem to be in a concentration.
FINDS
