Conclusion

CA 65 was excavated in hopes of further understanding the area of Civitate A. While it did not achieve any of the goals set forth in the beginning of the season, the excavation of CA 65 revealed an intentionally excavated depression into a flaky pale yellow soil, presumably the original surface level. Material such as roofing tile, pottery, animal bone and iron slag was deposited into this depression. Due to the relatively unabrated surface of the material recovered the accumulation of material is most likely not the result of erosion but an intentional deposit. There was no capping of rocks over this depression as had been found in CC 7 (see AJC/ARR I and AJC/ARR II ). There was a line of large stones bordering the southwestern curve of the lens. Due to the similarity of material types found in CA 65 to types found in CC 7, it is most likely that the depression in CA 65 is a trash midden. There was no material recovered from within the midden to give it a secure chronological date, however the types of artifacts being recovered would suggest a time frame earlier in the occupation of Piano Del Tesoro. of the depression was revealed and recorded, the full horizontal extent of the depression was not. Therefore it will be necessary to continue excavation to the north of CA 65 in order to fully understand the entire scope of the lens.
