Section A

The tile layer in the southern part of this section continued to be lifted. Found:






  • find 3
  • bucchero decorated handle frag



some frieze cavetto & 2 1/2 boxes of tiles

Work began on cleaning & isolating the EW crosswall section. Found: 1 sima cornice frag & a cavetto frag from a frieze plaque

Section B

Tiles continued to be lifted in the southern area of this section. Found: ridgepole tile frag

Fill was removed to the tile layer aroun the holmoak tree which was left standing for the time being. Found: 4 boxes of tiles, some pottery & a rocchetto with flattened ends. Work began on lifting the tile layer in the northern 3rd of this section. Found:

1. symbol on a pan tile

2. iron lump

3. rosette

4. statue fragsĀ  - perhaps of a male sphinx (see p 17 no. 8)

5. tile with high thin rim - .675m long & .11m high







  • find 8
  • possible sphinx statue, body frag

6. pottery in addition to the usual coarse ware: a) Ionic bowl rim & handle with banded decoration - on floor level below the tiles - 2.25m from EW crosswall (agger 5) & 3.35 from western Ns wall. Orange fabric with black glaze. b) from the same place - several more frags of the green fabric, including a rim c) also a frag of the dotted ware d) some frags including the base of the orange fabric with red paint e) bucchero frags including a knob to cover

7. some bones and teeth

8. 20 boxes of tile
