The first cut, to a depth of c. 40cm. was begun in grids A-H. Closely packed tile was encountered at the base of this cut in "B" and the attempt was made to continue the cut just above the appearance of tile in the remaining meters. A large stump in D-E 52, with roots extending across 53 and 54 allowed for only superficial excavation in this area.
