Cut 4 (25cm beneath trench floor, 85 cm below grid zeta/36-39 and 90cm beneath grid gamma/36-37)

Excavation continued on cut 4, beginning in grids gamma/38 and zeta/38 and continuing westward on either side of the southern wall. Pottery and tilef rom the south side of the wall were negligible in quantity; excavation to the north of the wall produced 1 cassetta of tile and 1 box of pottery. The former primarily consisted of Upper Building pan tiles lying on the floor of cut 4; this may indicate the very top of an Upper Building artifact level for the next cut (5). Pottery primarily consisted of fine impasto sherds, with a few coarseware rims and bases, as well as bucchero bits. Pottery and tile distribution increased in grids gamma/35-36 as we worked westward. 1 cas. tile, 1 box pottery.

In grids gamma-delta/37, a series of small rocks were found lying in an irregular line running from the north baulk perpendicular to the south wall (see p map). Cut 4 soil is yellowish, with bits of shale dispersed throughout.

Cut 5: (15cm deep from current trench floor: 95 cm below top dump soil in grid zeta/36-37)

Cut 5 was commenced north of the wall in grids gamma-delta/38. The soil contains many flecks of carbon, as well as bronze slag, moderate amounts of pottery and tile. Thus, we may be nearing the Upper Building level of habitation. Many, many pieces of bronze slag were found throughout this cut to gamma/35.\\

P.M.

Cut 4 was completed south of the wall, in grid zeta/35. The presence of pithoi and tile fragments in this area forced excavation by hammer and brush.

To the north of the wall, the several "adjacent lying stones" perpendicular to the southern wall in grids gamma-delta/37 were meticulously cleared, produced many piecesof bronze and glass slag from grid delta/37 (at the corner of the perpendicular stones and the southern wall) at a level of 95cm from the top of the dump, 50cm from natural top soil.

A similar line of perpendicular stones was discovered in grids gamma/delta 38. Both sets of stones parallel a similar

construction observed by Hare (JH Nk III), but Hare's stones were at a lower level. These may be part of a cuttress system, though the stones appear rather small for that function (see p ). Each "line" of stonres is one meter apart from the other. Under the gamma-delta/36-37 perpendicular stones, in grid gamma/36, a large piece of yellow "plaster" plus a large pan tile were found lying adjacent to each other.
