Daily Log Entry for Wednesday, 18 July 2007

WEDNESDAY, 18 JULY 2007

AM

Since some of our pick passes were pulling up small bits of very dark, Locus 6-like soil, we picked in the middle, south, and west to expose the darker soil under Locus 4.  The pick pass in the middle section pulled up more dark soil.  After the pick pass in the middle, we picked in the south section, where we also began to pull up some bits of darker soil.  We then picked twice in the western section, which was high, in order to level the trench.  The first pick pass in the west revealed a rocchetto fragment (Find #1) and a piece of vitrified terracotta (Find #2).  The second pick pass revealed another piece of incised impasto (Find #4).  The soil continues to be medium brown, mottled, & hard packed.  The soil has orange, white, and black inclusions and contains many small (2-5 cm across) pieces of terracotta, and pottery and bone.  We extracted an unusually large amount of plaster.  Most of the plaster consisted of small chunks (2-5 cm across) but there were some larger fragments (6-10 cm across) with reed

impressions.  Niether pick pass revealed any darker, burn-layer soil.  We did a rock just to the south of the SE corner of the roped-off stone feature.

PM

We picked in the middle and south sections to see if any more dark, Locus 6-like soil lies beneath the surface.  The middle pick pass

revealed no dark soil whatsoever.  Only the medium brown mottled soil was extracted.  The pick pass in the south instead revealed lots of dark soil.  The next pick pass in the south should remove the last of the Locus 4 soil and a new locus can be declared the in the south.  Several finds were extracted from the south pick pass including some fragments of incised buccheroid which seem to belong to the same vessel (Finds #5, 6, & 8), another rocchetto fragment (Find #7), and a piece of incised impasto (Find #9).
