Final Summary
The Agger 10 extension consisted of grids A-%, beta-.8 to the north of the area excavated by J. Neils ( see JN IV 1973 ). The area to be excavated was 6 x 11 meters, but grids C-6, alpha-B were omitted. See trench plan p. 2.
The area concentrated on was grids F-A 3-5 and A-B 8-0 in order to investigate the northern extent of walls 1 and 2 and their relationship to the SW corner and the south wall of the upper building. Grid measurements were taken from wall 2 G-F 3 and according to JN IV .
Architecture
The two parallel N-S walls designated 1 and 2 and described in JN IV were uncovered up to the S wall and the SW corner of the upper building.
Wall 1 is preserved to a height of approx. 1+ meters throughout the trench. It is composed of chipped, battered rocks filled with earth and smaller
stones. Its northern end does in fact bond in with the SW corner of the upper building. It is still not possible to determine the width of this wall without further excavation to the west. Its eastern face occurs in grids F-A 1.
The northern extension of wall 2 in grids F-B is preserved to a height of approx. 2+ meters. It is composed of large rocks packed in between with smaller rocks and earth. Whereas in grids G-D, wall 2 was almost entirely contained in grid 3, it leans over to the east in
grids F-B 4 and 5.
The northern end of wall 2 occurs in grid B-4 and does not bond in with the south wall of the uppe rbuilding. There is a passage approx. 1 meter wide between the two walls.Wall 2 will have ot be excavated further to the south of Agger 10 to determine its exact extent and purpose.
Strata
Topsoil:
The topsoil covering grids F-A 8-4 and F-A 3-1 consisted of black humus and small rocks. This stratum produced a few small pieces of pan
and cover tiles, as well as a few frieze plaque fragments and some coarse sherds.
Aggerfill:
This stratum contained the bulk of the finds: architectural terracottas, ridgepole, pan, and covertiles in lage pieces and in greater profusion, frieze plaque fragments, bone fragments, coarse pottery, and fine pottery including bucchero.
It consists of yellowish-gray soil with small rocks, as well as larger rocks along the N-S line of wall 2 which had presumably falllen off the top. This stratum is fairly consistent to a depth of about 1.5 meters. See profile, p. 35.
Chalky-white stratum:
Between approx. 1.5 and 1.7 meters down from the top of wall 2, there occurs a chalky-white soil with small rocks and fewer, smaller pan and cover tile fragments. Coarse pottery, bucchero, and the two pieces of bronze were found in this stratum. The stratum slopes upward
in grids C-A. See profile, p. 35.
Brown soil:
Below the chalky white stratum, there was tightly-packed brown soil with virtually no rocks and very few fragments of either pottery or tile.
Finds
Architectural terracotta:
Frieze plaques: Frieze plaque fragments were by far the most numerous finds. At least three types of plaques are represented: banquet (1 fragment), horse race (3), and procession (5?). In addition, there are four fragments of cavetto molding. Most of the frieze plaque fragments are in a poor state of preservation, with the exception of Find 3, p. 23.
Lateral sima: Seven fragments were found, including a human head, a lion-spout, part of a rosetta and pieces of molding. Lateral sima fragments occur on both the east
and the west of wall 2.
Rolling sima: 4 fragments were found - 3 pieces of molding and guilloche and one piece with the front paw of a running hound, part of the molding and part of the guilloche See Find 6, p. 24.
Gorgon antefix: One fragment of gorgon hair. See Find 2, p. 34.
Statue fragments : 3 possible fragments, two unidentifiable and one possible fragment of seated statue's chair.
Other terracotta:
A spindle whorl, undecorated ( see Find 1, p. 15 ). A complete rochetto ( see Find 9, p. 29 ). And an unidentified piece with a cone-shaped depression ( see Find 4, p. 28 ).
Bronze:
Only 2 thin fragments of bronze were found. See Find 2, p. 28 and Find 2, p. 32 .
Pottery:
A fair quantity of coarse, often burnt sherds were found, including rim, handle, and base sherds of pithoi
and other large pots. Fineware fills only 2 strawberry cartons.
There were some bucchero fragments, mostly occurring in the northern end of the trench on the east side of wall 2, including pieces from a bucchero lid (see Find 7, p. 25 and Find 3, p. 28 ) and a panther head (see Find 3, p. 32 ).
