Chart showing levels of strata.
As this is a dump (a sealed dump), the strata are of interest in determining the extent and purpose of the dump. Technically, Civitate A has 5 strata (A, B1, B2, C1, C2): B2 comprised of a dark clay mixed earth; B1 of this same earth plus fist-sized stones. B1 averages 50-60 cm thick except in the southern area (Grids 8, 9, and 10) where it diminishes! This layer comprises the seal of the dump. It is very tightly packed and has few sherds of any quality.
In B1, the area described by grid (5A-D, 2A-C) contained many large stones (20 cm x 20 x 20) and a large boulder (perhaps bedrock) was uncovered in grid D5. B2 is approximately the same thickness throughout. Stratum C1 is clay and stone. C2 is a sandy clay. Below C2, one oftend finds a light covering of stone which appears to have broken from the "pietra viva."
At the bottom of stratum C, Grid A3, a number of sherds were found among many charcoal remains.
