AM:
Work began preparing the entirety of the trench\x97CB 46 and both extensions\x97for photos and drawings. The baulk walls of the initial trench were trimmed and the surface was swept and roots were clipped. Troweling was done in the NE corner of Locus 7 and the SE corner of Locus 3 (where a root previously existed) to further define material. Similarly a final scrape was done across Locus 6 .
After consultation it was decided that two new loci would be declared in CB-46 ( Locus 8 and ). Locus 8 will be the entirety of the rock/terracotta feature, including Locus 3 , and its extensions in Locus 6 (the terracotta feature that extends approximately to 30S) and in Locus 7 (approximately extending to 33.5S; beyond 33.5S (33.5S-35S) the yellow gallestra like soil begins\x97this will be unexcavated). The soil within the rock feature in all three portions is the same\x97olive brown and very claylike. Meanwhile, will be declared over the northern most meter (29-30S) of Locus 6 , essentially the remaining portion of the extensions north of the terracotta/rock feature. While the soil is the same (olive brown and claylike), the lack of material across the area separates it from Locus 8 .
Drawing of the new loci:
(drawing)
Once the surfaces of Locus 8 and were swept and clipped and the baulk walls trimmed, opening photos of each Locus were taken. Locus 8 had photos taken from the N, S, E, and W to adequately show the extent of the feature. After photos, elevations were taken:
Locus 8 opening elevations:
1: (0W, 29.9S) 29.59mAE
2: (1W, 29.9S) 29.57mAE
3: (1W, 31S) 29.55mAE
4: (3W, 31S) 29.59mAE
5: (3W, 33S) 29.57mAE
6: (1W, 33S) 29.56mAE
7: (1W, 33.6S) 29.49mAE
8: (1W, 33.6S) 29.50mAE
9: (0W, 32S) 29.54mAE
opening elevations:
A: (0W, 20S) 29.60mAE
B: (1W, 29S) 29.56mAE
C: (1W, 29.9S) 29.57mAE
D: (0W, 29.9S) 29.59mAE
Elevations were also taken to close Locus 3 and Locus 7 . Closing elevations are:
Locus 3 closing elevations:
NE corner (0W, 31S): 29.55mAE
NW corner (3W, 31S): 29.59mAE
SW corner (3W, 33S): 29.57mAE
SE corner (0W, 33S): 29.52mAE
Locus 7 closing elevations:
NE corner (0W, 33S): 29.52mAE
NW corner (1W, 33S): 29.56mAE
SW corner (1W, 35S): 29.47mAE
SE corner (0W, 35S): 29.45mAE
After elevations were taken a drawing of Locus 8 was done on millimeter paper (see attached).
PM:
Drawing Locus 8 on millimeter paper took the majority of the afternoon. Once the drawing was completed, the terracotta spanning the entirety of the Locus was removed. There was a large amount of terracotta within the feature; rocks were kept in place. While removing the terracotta some pottery was found, as well as a terracotta brick (special find #1). Coordinates and elevations were taken:
Special find #1: terracotta brick
Elevations: 29.53mAE
Coordinates: 1.68W/32.54S
(drawing)
By the end of the day essentially all superficial terracotta was removed.
Pottery summary:
Terracotta: 1/32 nd bowl
Pottery: 1 piece
Terracotta: \xbd bowl
Pottery: 4 pieces
Baulk:
Terracotta: 0
Pottery: 4
Terracotta: 7 bowls
Pottery: 10 pieces
With that, CB-46 was effectively closed and closing photos were taken of the Locus without the terracotta. Because only terracotta was removed and ground was not dropped, closing elevations are the same as opening elevations (see page 91). The same goes for which went unexcavated. On Monday the trench will be tarped and backfilled, CB-46 may be reopened in later seasons.
