Pottery Summary

Only a small amount of pottery, 11 latte boxes, was recovered during the excavation of CA33 (extension) in 1995.  The pottery consisted primarily of coarseware, but limited amounts of impasto/buccheroid and creamware.

The majority of the pottery was recovered in the area "outside" the possible forno in meters N33/N32, W40-W34, but a significant amount of pottery was recovered from within the possible forno in meters N31, W37.  Much of the pottery from outside the possible forno was well worn, indicating possible washout, while that from within the possible forno seems to have been undisturbed since antiquity.

No full profiles were recovered and only a few joins were found.  Notable was the discovery of some vitrified and discolored plaster as well as

some carbonized material from N31, W38.  Furthermore, a large piece of iron slag was recovered from the same grid coordinates (N31, W38).  The discovery of these materials in 1995 in combination with those recovered from CA33 during consecutive seasons in 1990, 1991, and 1992 ( JB VI , JB VII ) may indicate that these materials are indicative of metallurgical activity.

The ceramic finds from 1992 appear to be generally consistent with those recovered from CA33 in 1990-1992.  However, the small amount of material recovered renders it difficult to draw any broad conclusions.  Further excavation is needed in order to better determine the possible metallurgical activities of this portion of the site.

All of the pottery found in CA33 during its excavation in 1990-1992, 1995 was broken down and boxed in the

following representative boxes:
