Daily Log

June 20, 1987

Topsoil cuts were begun in grids K-Q/54-56.  These cuts take T-26 right to T-22.  The T-26 grid system, as discussed in the introduction of this book, is being used for all these cuts.

K/54, the grid actually in T-22 (although its label in the T-22 grid system is different), produced much plaster with reed impressions.  These appear 10 cm from the surface.  Architectural tiles, including a ridgepole fragment, are also found.

At this early stage, grid M seems to mark a soil change.  In K-M, the soil becomes light and crumbly.  On the other side of M, the soil is dark brown.  It may be that we have hit a dump or refill for T-22.  The trench book for T-22 will have to be consulted to answer this question.

K/55, at 30 cm below the surface, produced large pieces of plaster - some with possible cover tile impressions.

At 85 cm below surface in K/55, there is a high carbon concentration and much plaster.  K/54 at 70 cm below the surface produced a large fragment of a ridgepole tile ( 19870141

).  This was lifted and brought down to the magazino (in several pieces).

N-P/56 produced amounts of badly worn tiles and plaster.  Bucchero and fine grayware and orangeware were found.  One piece of modern glazed pottery was also found.

J/55 appears to be new dirt and not the refill mentioned above.  At 40 cm, bone and antler were found; plaster and tile also.

In I-K/54, there is a rock pack of thin stones and grayish earth at 10 cm below surface.  Below the stone packing, dark soil exists - very little is found here.

Editorial Note

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
