Conclusion
The excavation of CB 45 has been highly informative and highly successful in achieving its goals. Although excavation did not clarify a relationship between this area of Civitate B and the area containing trenches CB-35, 38, and 39, the stratigraphy and topography of the area was greatly clarified and a good deal of datable material was recovered from a securely ancient context.
Within 20 cm of excavation, a rock packing was discovered in both the main trench, Locus 2 and 6 and extension 3, locus 8 . The rock packing extended across the entirety of the main trench and extension 3 with exception to approximately a meter in the south and a half-meter in the north. The lack of rocks in these areas clearly delineates the extent of the rock packing with a trajectory running east-west. The rocks varied in size from approximately 5-10 cm to 15-20 cm in diameter. The density and organization of rocks at this layer suggests that the feature was man made. This hypothesis was further confirmed through the discovery of substantial quantities of dateable architectural terracotta, including frieze plaque and akroteria fragments, interspersed throughout the feature in CB-45 and two related trenches CB-46 and CB 49, five and two meters east of CB-45, respectively.
Although the precise function of the rock feature remains unknown, its discovery suggests occupation of this area of Poggio Civitate during or postdating the archaic period. The course and composition of this feature offers a more comprehensive visual understanding of its possible utility, however more excavation is needed in order to positively identify the exact function of this rock feature
