[J. Neils]

Work continued in Trench 19.  Grids J-M 33 were cleaned down to a tile layer approximately 1 meter below topsoil.  Tiles are broken into small pieces and interspersed with small stones ( ).

Two cassetti of tiles were discarded, along with 1/4 box of bones and 1 cassetta of pottery (bucchero, impasto, and pithoi).

T-19 H-I 40-41 Tile Layer

The tree in this area was taken down.  The stump was full of tile and pithoi fragments, as well as a few small pieces of bucchero.  The pithos apparently rested directly below the tree with one handle appearing at either side.  Then the area under the tree was cleared down to the tile fall.  Finds included:

19720529

  • Find #1
  • T19 I-40
  • Fragment of banquet freize plaque; preserves part of guilloch and feet

19720128

  • Find #2
  • T19 H40
  • Bucchero fragment; fragment of rim with incised decoration, possible writing

Heavy concentration of tiles around and inside pithos.  Mostly broken pan tiles.  Perhaps the level in which the rim of the pithos rested is a floor level.

Next, the interior of the pithos was cleared.  It was filled with broken pan tiles and cover tile fragments.  Also contained a small piece of bronze and a piece of bucchero.  The pithos was lying rim-down.  The pithos is approximately 60 cm in diameter.  The entire rim is preserved, as well as part of the wall and handles.

2 cassetti of tile were discarded.
