A.M.

After closing Locus 4 at the end of the day on July 2, we officialy opened Locus 5 today.  Opening elevations for Locus 5 are:

52S/182E = 27.105 m.

52S/180E = 27.06 m.

49S/182E = 27.085 m.

49S/180E = 27.13 m.

The soil in Locus 5 contains large amounts of plaster, sm. to md.-sized rocks, burnt terracotta and carbon.  It is browner than the soil in Locus 4 and is also more clumpy.  We completed two pick passes and uncovered 5 special finds: an iron fragment ( Find #1 ), an orangeware tondo ( Find #2 ), a buccheroid tondo ( Find #3 ), a bucchero tondo ( Find #4 ), and a piece of reed-impressed plaster ( Find #5 ).  Tile and pottery amounts for the morning will be included in this afternoon's entry.

P.M.

We completed 2/3 of a pick pass in the trench from E182-180/S52 to E182-180/S50.  Due to the increased sensitivity of the materials recovered from the soil, we have decided to sort directly in the trench as opposed to shovelling the soil into buckets and sifting into the wheelbarrow.  During picking we noticed a change in the soil.  It is a darker brown, thicker and clumpier and contains an increased amount of architectural terracotta and small rocks.

Tomorrow, we will complete the pick pass in the remaining 1/3 of the trench, trim the baulk walls and then designate a new locus: Locus 6 .  Special finds unearthed in the afternoon include a piece of worked  bone ( Find #6 ), an impasto tondo ( Find #7 ) and a waster ( Find #8 ).  5 cassettas of tile and plaster were uncovered as well as 1 1/2 cassettas of pottery and bone.
