Daily Log

August 9, 1971

The trench area was cleaned and polished (Angelo) and trench wall F-J/30-31 was cut vertically, as far as possible without breaking the protruding tiles.  The same observation was now made about this profile as about profile D-J/28-29 2 m westwards: the north and south tile layers covering respectively G-H and F-G, the latter on a lower level south of stone line, seem to be separated in profile by a ca. 10 cm thick layer containing carbon.

Immediately south of stone line, the strip of clay plaster is clearly visible in trench wall. See profile drawing on p. 269.

Profile drawings made this morning:

  1. (A-) F-J/30-31: see p. 269
  2. E-F/29-30: see p. 204
  3. J-K/23-30 (north border of excavated area in trench T-18): see p. 260
  4. C-D/23-28 (south border of excavated area in trench T-18): see p. 261

In profile E-F/29-30, it was noticed that a tile layer did not seem to cover area on top of "hearth" where just scattered tiles occur in profile wall.  The real height of the "hearth" may, with regard to this fact, be considered uncertain: perhaps it once reached a higher level than its excavated upper surface.  Its loose earthy consistenc doesn\'t contradict this.

Gray small stone pavement in F/30 found to rise considerably towards SE.

Trench T-18 ready for remaining trench photos tomorrow.
