daily log

8 July 2015

AM

Work commenced this morning using hand picks in the middle of the trench to define the rocks in that area and to bring that area down to the level of the rest of the trench. The soil continues to be yellowish-brown and clay-like with the soil containing slightly more moisture than it did at higher elevations. However, it should be noted that the soil becomes light brown, and very dry and friable throughout the day due to constant sunlight. Once the soil is broken up it will then be hand sorted into buckets using trowels.

The concentration of pottery and tile recovered from the northern half of the trench continues to increase.

The roots extending from the northern wall were removed.

The soil was cleared and roots were clipped until lunch.

PM

The afternoon began with leveling the north end of the trench using hand picks. The soil there is wetter than in

other areas of the trench due to the root presence removed this morning. Soil is hand sorted into buckets. Additionally, it was decided to work on the baulk walls at both the northern and southern ends of the trench. Any soil exposed to sunlight continues to dry quickly.

During baulk walling a large rock in the southwestern corner of the trench was removed. During removal of the rock a cavetto fragment was recovered.
