Daily Log

June 30, 1994

The entire area of T-27, as it was left at the end of the 1990 season, was cleaned and defined.  Backfill and washout was removed and the pre-existing baulks were straight.  One full cassette of tile and roughly 4/5 of a latte box of worn, fragmentary pottery was removed from this soil throughout the entire area of the trench.

Although some degree of erosion had occurred, extensions of T-27 were laid out according to the original baulks of the trench.  Late in the season, when the transit can be obtained from the comune, we will align the trench more precisely to the grid for this flank of the hill.

The new extensions of T-27 include A-C/71-4, F-G/71, and H-M/72-73.

Within the washout of A/68 was found a large terracotta waster (#1) and 2 pieces of fragmentary ridgepole tile (#2 and 3) were found within the washout of D-E/68-69.

Surface cuts were initiated in meters L-M/72-73, F-G/71-73, and H-I-J/72-73.  Given the slope of the hill, surface cuts in L-M/72-73, F-G/71-73, and H-I-J/72-73 are roughly wedge shaped, with a greatest depth in L-M/72-73 of roughly 45 cm, a greatest depth in F-G/71-73 H-I-J/72-73 of roughly 50 cm.

A full cassetta of heavily worn and fragmentary tile was removed from the rocky, dark brown topsoil.  Pottery was limited to 2 worn sherds.  One small amorphous bronze was found at about 25 cm b.s. of meter H/73.

Surface cuts were also initiated in B-C/71-74 as well as J/71-74.  These extended to a depth of roughly 10 cm and each produced about 1/5 of a cassetta of tile apiece.  About 25 sherds of pottery were recovered from J/71-74 although none was found in B-C/71-74.

Soil was consistently dark brown and rocky and very heavy with roots in both areas.  A small

fragment of vitrified bronze was found in J/73.
