Daily Log

August 2, 1971

Three areas of excavation were in progress today: T9\', the area in T9 approx B-C 8-13 where the stone fill was left in 1969, and T9 N-R 11-13.

T9\' was the most exciting in terms of finds and architecture. Remeasured, because of the extension made 31 July to the east, the grid system is now 1-11, grids 1-10 being each in meter in length (1.5 m in iwdth to the north side of the wall) and grid 11 being 70cm in length. This does not upset previous grid designation on finds. The plan was to uncover flat rocks similar to those along the wall in T9 N-R 3-5, but only one was cleared, that in T9\' 2, though apparently three others exist to the east in T9\', because of the discovery in T9\' 3-4 at a depth of 57 cm of 3 joining pieces of a ridgepole tile with a vertical projection and scars from some sort of decoration, probably a cut-out. At

any rate, there eventually appeared to be 9 flat rocks running along the T9 and T9\' wall at regular intervals. Other T9\' finds were concentrated in the eastern grids and small in nature, the rest of Saturday's fibula, some rocchetti fragments, and a bucchero handle of abstract desgin. THe one find made at the western end was a poor piece of cornice.

In lifting the rocks in B-C 7-13, it seems that the area was some sort of dump into which mostly tiles and dirt and large rocks were thrown. THe finds consisted of one box of tiles, one piece of frieze, and a loomweight. The soil was essentially a fine light yellow clay, with spots of pink. In the area actually dug, 8-11, appeared a line of rocks slanting down to the west which probably connects with that visible in 13.

T) N-R 11-13 was excavated down to the level of the fossa which the trench

is intended to follow. This cut in the bedrock seems to peter out in N-O 11-12 or perhaps make a short distance turn south. The finds were extremely scanty and worn: 1-2 box of tiles, and sherds coming from the fossa or rock cut primarily.
