AM:
Locus 2 was opened in the morning which recorded the previously unexcavated northern portion of the trench measuring 2.00m x 1.75m. This is the area north of the bedrock outcropping which emerged in Locus 1 during the last two days. It is also the area of T100 which encompasses a portion of T50 where excavation stopped in 2009 (see DWM II).
Opening photos were taken of Locus 2. Opening elevations and coordinates of Locus 2:

Locus 2 Munsell designation: 2.5Y 5/4 light olive brown
The sunbaked clay, light brown soil in Locus 2 was loosened with a pick pass. It was hand sorted into buckets. There were inclusions of tile and plaster, but with less frequency than in Locus 1. There were also a couple pieces of pottery and plaster with reed impressions.

Burnt bone; 5 fragments
Locus 1 continued to be scraped back with hand picks and trowels to the north and west from the southeast corner. The compact plaster layer in that corner was revealed to lie on top of several horizontally placed fairly well-preserved pan tiles. Scraping continued throughout the morning to reveal its full extent. The soil in Locus 1 was medium brown, compact, and claylike. There were inclusions of many tile fragments, plaster fragments, some pottery, and some bone.

The soil in Locus 2 was loosened with another pick pass. The soil was slightly more moist but still very clay like and clumpy. There were inclusions of carbon emerging in the western side along the baulk. There were also frequent inclusions of chalky stone in small fragments. Some (rare) pottery and tile was also present.

After a third pick pass in Locus 2 pre-galestra appeared throughout most of the Locus except the northwest corner which had dark brown soil and inclusions of pottery and bonewhile the rest of the Locus was without inclusions. In that corner a large bone was uncovered but not removed as it continued down into compact soil. Several (3) fragments that had chipped from it were recovered as separate bulk bone. A rocchetto head fragment was also recovered there.
