Daily Log

6 July 2015

The morning began with a pick pass in the northern half of the trench in order to bring that area down to the level of the rock feature in the southern half. Soil was hand sorted into buckets using hand picks and trowels. During clearing a fragment of decorative bone and a fragment of ridged pottery were found.

Locus 2

Another pick pass was executed in the northern half of the trench. A pickaxe was broken. Small concentrations of pottery have been found. The amount of tile recovered has decreased as the level of the trench lowers.

During clearing a fragment of iron was found.

Find #4 : Iron fragment

Elevation: 26.54 m AE

Coordinates: 103.80E/46.60S

Locus 2

Due to the increase in size and number of rocks it was decided to switch to hand picks as the primary method of breaking up the soil. Small concentrations of

terra cotta and pottery continue to be recovered. After leveling the trench and defining the rocks it was decided to clean up the baulk walls. Once the baulk walls were clean roots were clipped until lunch.

The afternoon began with hand picking in the north of the trench. The soil became baked out over lunch from sunlight and is dry and gritty. The dirt is sorted by hand and placed into buckets to be dumped. Bone, pottery, and terra cotta continue to be recovered. Less terra cotta and pottery were recovered than in the morning. A pick pass was then executed in the second meter of the trench. Where large amounts of rocks are present hand picks were used instead. After picking and cleaning up the dirt roots were clipped and closing

elevations were taken.
