Stratigraphy Summary

Baulk trimming and excavation of the section trench revealed the following strata in the T21 west baulk.

1) humus layer of the top soil, containing decayed vegetal matter and grass roots 2.5 Y 3/2 -dark olive brown.

2) topsoil with rocks and few terracotta inclusions.  2.5Y 5/3-4/3 -light olive brown to olive brown.

3) medium brown soil, similar to #2.  2.5Y 4/2 -dark grayish brown.

4) light brown soil with terracotta fragments.  5Y 6/3 -pale olive.  with areas of very light ash.  5Y 7/2-7/3  -light grey to pale olive.

5) burn layer, with carbon, plaster, and terracotta inclusions.  2.5Y 5/3 -light olive brown.  high carbon concentration 2.5Y 5/2 -grayish brown

6)sterile soil or bedrock.  2.5Y 4/3 -olive brown.  2.5Y 6/3  -light yellowish brown

The strata are often uneven in contour both vertically and horizontally, especially the burn layer, which lenses in meters S 42-44, E 151-152 and S 49-50, E 149-150.  It is narrower in meters S 38-39, E 153 and S 41-43, E 152, where it rests on the bedrock.

South Building section cuts (loci 12,16) both had similar stratigraphy.  Two different layers were noticable: a burn layer, 2.5Y 5/3 -light olive brown, and sterile soil layer, 2.5Y 6/3 -light yellowish brown.

Open Context editors work with data contributors to annotate datasets to shared vocabularies, ontologies, and other standards using 'Linked Open Data' (LOD) methods.

The annotations presented above approximate some of the meaning in this contributed data record to concepts defined in shared standards. These annotations are provided to help make datasets easier to understand and use with other datasets.
