The stones of the southeast corner of the upper building were fully cleaned and exposed with pick, hammer, and shovel. The soil covering them was tossed to the osuth of the southern border of th wall.
The area surrounding the unfired cover tiles was swept and the sand above the unfired cover tiles (meters U,V,W-71-73) was carefully pulled back with mestaline. The tiles and floor surrounding them were then brushed down. The unfired cover tiles were not brushed completely clean because they were still moist. They will
be cleaned further, time permitting, upon further drying.
The baulk in meters U,V,W-71/70, about 10 cm above the floor and presumably more unfired cover tiles, was begun to be taken down with mestaline to the unfired cover tiles. Also, the unfired cover tiles in meter U-70 were exposed with mestaline and brush. The unfired cover tiles in the baulk in U,V,W-71/70 were found to have foot prints in them also (bare feet) - also, there was a tile, apparently unfired, with a letter incised on it adjacent to the other tiles. A column base (stone) was uncovered beneath the baulk in meters U-W-71/70 at ~35 cm.
Meters P,Q-74-76 were completely taken to ~75 cm. The soil here (from ~45-60 cm) was almost completely plaster, containing a large quantity of tile. From ~60 cm - 75 cm ("floor" level), there was again much plaster, but containing little pottery or tile. A black burn layer, composed of what appeared to be plaster and is thought to be floor which has burned black and softened, was encountered at ~75 cm. This black layer was
at first begun to be removed but then excavation was continued above the black layer through meters P,Q-74-76. Meter P-74 remains unexcavated due to a large stump which occupies this meter. A series of small stones, covered with plaster and apparently just above the black "plaster" layer, was uncovered at ~75 cm in the northern portion of P-75-76.
Note also that a smaller stone, apparently imbedded into what may be "floor," was found directly to the north of the column base in meter R,S-74/75, ~25 cm away. Also note that a similar small stone, imbedded into the "floor," was found in X-59, ~20 cm from the column base in X,Y-59/60. And upon further inspection, another small stone to the north of the column base in U/V-64/65 was seen to lie above "floor" or stone packing (it is difficult to discern at this point). Also, there is the same type of small stone imbedded in the "floor" ~25 cm north of the column base in meter S-72.
Work began with hammer and mestaline to remove the remainder of the baulk in U,V,W-74/72. This baulk is removed and it is not clear at the moment whether the unfired cover tiles are indeed here. The southern portion of emters W-71-73 were also taken down with hammer, exposing the unfired cover tiles in some portions of these meters but not in others.
Work with hammer and mestaline continued in meters S,T-73 towards the west. Again, more unfired cover tiles were encountered, but there was no time to expose these. The ~20 cm of soil above the "floor" and possibly unfired cover tiles in meters S,T-71-73 was left unexcavated today.
One box of pottery was recovered from P,Q-74-76 and one from RST-70-73. Almost all the tile came from P,Q-74-76.
