It was decided to work on site rather than in the mag until 9:15 to use the good light conditions to excavate the feature and Locus 5 further. This was donew ith trowels, with all material from this context carefully sorted manually into a dust pan.
Opening elevations Locus 5 24.56 AE
A rock packing was found at the bottom of Locus 5 and will be declared Locus 6. Opening photographs and elevations were taken. The rocks appear set into a very hard, compacted, clay like soil.
Opening elevation for Locus 6 is 24.51 AE
Work will now begin with trowels to remove the rock packing. The rock packing itself is associated with only tiny terracotta inclusions of less than 1mm in diameter. After a further five centimetres excavation, compacted yellow sterile soil was found. The feature noarrowed to a size indicative that it was no longer a deliberately created pit. It appears that the rock packing may have been the intended bottom surface of the feature.
Closing elevation for Locus 6 is 24.37 AE
