Daily Log Entry for Friday, 29 June
FRIDAY, 29 JUNE 2007
AM
We began with a pick pass across the center of the trench. Material was collected and sorted. We continued defining and pulling the soil back from the tiles to the south of the archaic stone feature. Soil remains a medium, mottled borwn; it is hard-packed with little organic material besides roots. We continued to observe charcoal/carbon flecks throughout the soil, although there is a higher concentration of carbon in the area to the north of the center of the trench. We uncovered terracotta that appears to be in line with the tile spread across the trench. We began carefully defining with trowels to determine the extent of the terracotta. We made another light pick pass around the south center and southeast areas of the trench to remove thicker layers of soil over the terracotta tile spread. Tile continued to spread across the trench. Although the tiles south of the rock feature seem to slope down, they may not hold across the trench because the new-found tile much more on level with the tiles in the northeast
corner of the trench. We found a hole through the soil slightly north of center and determined that it came from a root removed with the stump that used to be in the area. While trimming the southwest baulk corner, we found a piece of ridgepole tile which we made a find (Find #1). A cavetto fragment was loosened and removed from the center of the trench (Find 2). We continued defining around tiles for the rest of the morning.

Uncovering and defining roofing tiles and linking the two tile spreads (the one in the NE and the one to the south of the roped-off rock feature), were still the primary goals after lunch. Because Jason wanted us to work faster, more work was done with pick-axes than was done in the morning. Pick passes were done in the trench to level it out; they mostly occurred along the southern boundary, near the stones in in the SE, and in the center of the trench. We removed dirt & defined rocks and tiles. Some rocks were removed, including the large one in the middle of the trench. The soil contains inclusions of small to medium rocks, terracotta, bone, pottery, & carbon. The area to the north of the center still conatins higher densities of carbon/charcoal. A broken (w/out fresh breaks) ceramic handle was also found in this area. Pick passes were also made in the area directly to the east of the roped-off stone feature. As of yet, no large fragments of roofing tile have been recovered from here, but the picked soil did contain inclusions of pottery, bone,

& terracotta. The bault wall on the eastern edge of the roped-off stone feature was trimmed.
Soil throughout the trench still contains roots, which were clipped as we uncovered them. The area in the south of the trench was aggressivly picked and trowelled towards the end of the day to see if the tile spread in Locus 2 slopes downward to the south of the trench, where tile is visible about 30 cm down in the baulk wall. So far, it doesn\'t seem to.
