The trench finally dried out enough to work.  Still, the soil was quite moist and heavy.  It also contained many cobble-sized (10cm) and smaller stones.  As has been true from the beginning of the work in H-I/23-24, there is very little tile or pottery in this soil.  Excavation of this area stopped at 82cm.

It is clear from the stratigraphy of the south baulk in the area of H-I/23-24 that we have not found Gantz' French 6b.

Excavation commenced on H-I/20-22 stumps had to be removed, at least on the surface before excavation of the topsoil could begin.  The current plan is to remove a 10-15cm layer of this topsoil with the hope of defining wher Gantz' trench did lie if not in H-I/23-24.  As an aid to answering this question we may

clean down the N baulk ofT-25 U-V/18-26 to get some idea of what the fill looks like and where it is located in space.

Assuming thatT-6b is actually west of where we were excavating previously presents an interesting situation.  If H-I/23-247 is stratified soil, then it has very little in it.  A 2m x 2m x0.7m area produced perhaps one cassette of tile and one liter box of pottery.  It is an extremely small amount of material considering the size of the area.  Thus things remain in a sli8ghtly confused state until the topsoil of H-I/20-22 is removed.  By the end of the day we had excavated approximately 12 cm.
